How to choose a first dance song that sounds like the two of you, and how long it should really play, from DJs who've cued it for hundreds of couples.
The lights come down and the room goes quiet. Somebody's aunt already has a tissue out. Then the first note plays, and for a few minutes it's just the two of you. People forget the centerpieces. They remember this.
That's a lot to ask of one song. Here's how we help couples find the right one.
01 · Start with a feeling, not a chart
Skip the "top first dance songs" lists for now. Sit together and name a moment instead: the drive where you sang in the car, the song from the kitchen at midnight, the one that was playing when you knew. A song with a memory behind it will always beat a popular one.
If nothing comes to mind, pick a mood. Do you want tender and slow, sweeping and cinematic, or a slow start that turns into a party? The mood cuts the list down fast.
02 · Read every lyric
Plenty of beautiful melodies hide a breakup in the second verse. Before you commit, read the full lyrics out loud to each other. If a line makes you wince, or makes you laugh when you didn't mean to, keep looking.

03 · Timing, and shortening your song
A four-minute song feels short in rehearsal and very long when 150 guests are watching. For most couples, two and a half to three minutes is right: long enough to take it all in, short enough that the room is still with you at the end.
We let the song play through the second chorus, then bring it down slowly so your final dip lands in the quiet.
We cut a verse or bridge so the song keeps its full arc, just shorter. Most guests never notice.
Start slow and sentimental, then drop into an upbeat song and invite everyone onto the floor.

04 · A real first dance
Danielle's grandparents danced to Etta James at their wedding in 1962. She wanted that moment, and Marcus wanted the dance floor packed by the last note.
We played "At Last" for ninety seconds, let the final line ring out, then went straight into Earth, Wind & Fire. The whole room was dancing before the couple finished laughing.
