Tucked into a downtown block at 1104 San Antonio Street, The Allan House is one of those Austin venues couples fall for the moment they walk the stone path into the courtyard. It’s also a venue where your DJ’s planning matters more than usual: the property sits close to its neighbors, amplified sound has a hard ceiling, and outdoor music has a curfew. None of that stops a great party. It just means the party has to be designed.
A little history first
The house was built in 1883 by John Allan, a Scottish immigrant who worked as an attorney and public servant in Austin. After his death, it served as a girls’ school and boarding home, then in 1905 was bought by Thomas E. Thrasher, whose family kept it for 94 years. Vicki and Daniel Ross purchased it on the last day of 1999, restored it, and have run it as an event venue ever since. You feel that history inside: heart pine floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and crystal chandeliers.
The spaces, and how we set up sound for each
The main event. Heritage oaks, mountain laurels and stone paths. We spread smaller speakers around the dance floor instead of two loud stacks, so everyone hears clearly at a lower level.
Perfect for an intimate ceremony or cocktail hour. A single discreet speaker and a wireless mic for your officiant keep vows audible without filling the block.
The Victorian parlors suit smaller weddings. Hard floors and tall windows are lively, so we keep the low end tight and aim speakers into the room.
A climate-controlled clear tent covers the courtyard in winter. Great for uplighting, and we plan speaker placement around the tent poles.
Working with the 85 dB limit
The Allan House asks that amplified sound stay under 85 decibels, measured from the corners of the property. That’s about the level of busy city traffic, so a full dance floor is absolutely doable. The trick is spreading sound evenly rather than blasting it from one spot.
Loud isn’t the goal. A packed dance floor is.
- Distributed speakers. Several smaller cabinets close to guests beat two big speakers cranked from the edge of the lawn.
- Aim toward the house. Pointing speakers inward keeps energy in the courtyard and off the property lines.
- Watch the bass. Low frequencies travel farthest. We place subs carefully and keep them controlled.
- Check the corners. We use a decibel meter at sound check and walk the perimeter with your coordinator.
Planning your timeline around the curfew
Outdoor amplified sound ends at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, 11 PM on Thursdays and 10:30 PM Sunday through Wednesday. Indoor music has no time restriction. We build your run of show backward from your curfew so the biggest songs land while everyone’s still on the floor.
Uplighting the oaks and the veranda
The courtyard’s old oaks are made for lighting. Our wireless uplights wash the trunks and canopy, and we can light the veranda columns so the house glows behind your dance floor. A soft color for dinner and a festive color once the dancing starts changes the whole mood without adding a single decibel.
Vendor notes worth knowing
- Every event needs a professional coordinator on site for the full rental. We sync load-in, sound check and timeline with them early.
- The venue handles setup and breakdown of tables, chairs and furnishings, so our DJ and lighting load-in slots in around their layout.
- Catering comes from the venue’s preferred list, and bartending is handled by The Peached Tortilla (as of December 1, 2025).
